2020 Viognier

2020 Viognier

2020 Viognier

Salomon Vineyard, Sonoma Valley

Tasting Notes: Barrel-fermented and aged over a year, this is a richly textured Viognier with a soft, pillowy mouthfeel and balanced, integrated acids. Lovely aromas of apricot and orange blossom jump from the glass while the palate adds bright flavors of beeswax and green banana with some underlying savory hints. Only 62 cases produced.

Vineyard: Linda and Bob Salomon have devoted their retirement years to farming this tiny gem of a vineyard in Sonoma Valley north of Kenwood. Our block of Viognier is entirely dry-farmed and has more pebbles mixed into the predominant Huichica loam than the surrounding area. The southeast exposure at an elevation of 450 feet and cool air rolling off the mountains to the west create just the right conditions for gentle ripening and retention of acidity.

Vintage: A dry winter with just half of the region’s normal rainfall caused lower vegetative growth and vigor than in previous years, indicating that yields would be lower in 2020 than the bumper crops of 2018 and 2019. Average degree days throughout the year were a bit higher than the 10 year average, but temperatures were consistent without heat spikes. Berries were small, with concentrated flavors, typically a good recipe for quality. A mid-August lightning storm caused wildfires which threatened vineyards throughout the western parts of the county, but the smoke stayed away from Salomon Vineyard in Sonoma Valley until we were able to harvest on September 15th with no measurable smoke compounds in the grapes.

Winemaking: Easy peasy - the fruit was whole-cluster pressed directly to barrel where it underwent both primary and malolactic fermentation in neutral French oak and was bottled unfined and unfiltered after a year of aging.
